We have talked about respect in several of our previous blogs, and now husbands, it is time to talk about love.  February is already upon us, and it will soon be Valentine’s Day; so here are some suggestions for making it a great day for your wife.

We received the following information from the lady who does our announcements in Sundays School.  “Do not give your wife scales of any kind, anything that has to be plugged in, anything that is guaranteed to make her look ten years younger or anything that lifts and separates.”  Good advice!

One important thing to remember is that if your wife says, “Oh, you don’t need to get me anything for Valentine’s Day” that does not really mean that you should not get her anything for Valentine’s Day.  Completely ignore her comment.  If she is saying this because you are on a tight budget and is being frugal and considerate, still get her something for Valentine’s Day.  It does not have to be expensive or extravagant.

Some things do not cost much but are priceless.  You can save five or six dollars by making her a card.  You don’t have to be a poet, just tell her what she means to you.  If taking her out to dinner is out of the budget this year, then prepare dinner for her.  Tell her in advance that you are going to do this so she won’t spend all day making you a romantic dinner.  Feed the kids peanut butter sandwiches (if they are not allergic to peanuts) and tuck them into bed early.  Then prepare your specialty even if it is pasta and spaghetti sauce out of a jar.  Set the table or place a table cloth on the floor surrounded by candles and serve her dinner (with your handmade card).  Be sure and clean up afterward so that she doesn’t have to clean up dirty dishes in the morning.

Maybe cooking is out of the question for you, if so, give her a spa night.  Put candles in the bathroom and fill the bathtub with warm water and bubble bath. Tell her to enjoy relaxing while you put the kids to bed and tell them a story.  Light candles in the bedroom or some other comfortable room in the house and when your wife finishes her bath, give her a foot rub, and/or full body massage.

Instead of going out to a movie, rent a “chick flick” that she has been wanting to see and make her a strawberry ice cream soda to drink while you watch the movie together. (Vanilla ice cream + strawberry soft drink = strawberry soda)

Gifts do not have to be big.  Your wife might really appreciate her favorite candy bar tied up in a ribbon and given to her with a card made by you.  If your budget is tight, give her a single rose instead of a dozen roses.

Maybe your wife’s love language is acts of service, if so, make a coupon book with promises to do things for her such as baby-sitting so she can have a few moments to herself, or a promise to do the dishes for a week, anything that you know would make her happy.

Of course, if money is not a concern then don’t be tight; take her to Paris for a romantic dinner at a little restaurant in Montmartre.

Whatever you do, start now to be creative and make your wife feel loved and cherished this Valentine’s Day.
