Building a Sacred History

By:  Donna Martin

At a recent funeral the family was sharing memories of the deceased loved one.  This lady had shown love to her family is various ways.  She had a sense of humor and loved to have a good time.  She had a servant’s heart and was always helping others.  She loved God and told others about God’s love not only in her words, but also by her actions.  She had been a loving wife and supported her husband who had passed away before her.  It was evident that her children and grandchildren loved her and that the legacy or “sacred history” she left was worth far more than a monetary inheritance.

What if you died today?   What would your spouse, children, or grandchildren say about you?  Would you leave behind a “sacred history” a legacy of love and fond memories that would be a comfort to those you leave behind?

Or, would you leave behind nightmares of regrets that would haunt your loved ones?  Instead of loving words and deeds would they remember selfish behaviors, arguments, harsh words, or feelings of abandonment or distrust?

If you haven’t already, begin today to live a life filled with the fruits of the spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22 “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”  It is not an easy life to live especially if you try to do it on your own.  You will need to have the spirit of God in you.  To have God’s spirit in you, you must have a relationship with Jesus Christ.  Call on Jesus today, turn to Him and, if you haven’t already, invite him to be the Lord of your life.  Then, go out and create a “sacred history” that will bring comfort and joy to your family even after you are gone.
