A Mighty Fortress is Our God

By:  Donna Martin

Our country is experiencing the most unusual election in our history.  Each day is filled with new surprises about the candidates who are running for the highest office in our country - an office that has, in the past, been viewed with respect and honor.  The election has taken its toll on the nerves of many men and women. Each day we are bombarded with breaking news about the candidates.  Not to mention the millions of post on Facebook and Twitter and the “discussions” which have severed friendships.

Amid all of this chaos, it is good to reflect on the words of the song “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.”  These are the words from the second verse of the song:

  These are the words from the second verse of the song:

                Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing;
                Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing:
                Dost ask who that might be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
                Lord Sabaoth, his name, From age to age the same,
                And He must win the battle.

No matter who wins the election next Tuesday, Jesus is still our King.  He is still on His throne.  As Jason Snyder, one of the ministers at our church says, “Nothing is a surprise to God.”  He already knows who will be our next president.  And no matter who that may be, God is still in control.

Our country was founded as a Christian nation.  Contrary to what some people may say today, our forefathers established the United States as a Christian nation.  Listen to a sermon found on the Pathway to Victory Website at this link http://ptv.org/broadcasts/america-is-a-christian-nation-3/?popup=true. Robert Jeffers, the pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas gives some interesting facts about the intentions of our forefathers when they established our nation.  Even though we were meant to be a Christian nation, only 48% of people in the United States today profess to be Christians.   That statistic tells us that we who profess to be Christians have a mission field here at home just waiting for us to obey the Great Commission.  Thankfully, in our nation we still have the freedom to share our faith with people without fear of imprisonment or persecution.  We want to elect a president who will protect that freedom.  And more importantly we need to exercise that freedom.

The hymn “A Mighty Fortress is our God” was written by Martin Luther, the leader of The Reformation.  The song was based on the words from Psalm 46.   Amid all of the chaos, stress and uncertainty of our times we can gain strength and peace from the words of the Psalmist in verses 10-12.

                Be still, and know that I am God;
                I will be exalted among the nations,
                I will be exalted in the earth.
                The Lord Almighty is with us,
                The God of Jacob is our fortress.

Take time before the election to be still and listen to God.  Pray for our nation and for the election.  Pray for the candidates and pray that our nation will return to God.
